Summary

HPLJEntMFP M725HP has expanded its selection of monochrome A3 MFPs with the launch of the new LaserJet Enterprise MFP M725 series. The new line consists of four 40-ppm machines: the M725dn, which is a print, copy, and scan device; and the M725f, M725z and M725z+models, which also support fax functionality. The new units are based on an 800 MHz processor and feature 1GB memory as well as HP FutureSmart firmware, enhanced mobility features, and a Hardware Integration Pocket (HIP). Each unit provides an easy-access USB port and standard Ethernet connectivity. HP also offers optional wireless capabilities. The new machines have a 200,000-page monthly duty cycle and a print resolution of 1,200 × 1,200 dpi, and each ships with standard automatic duplexing and a 100-sheet reversing automatic document feeder (ADF). The paper capacity varies by model, ranging from a standard capacity of 600 sheets in the M725dn up to 4,100 sheets in the M725z. Both the M725dn and M725z accommodate up to 4,600 sheets. The higher-end MFP M725z and M725z+ units also offer a 500-sheet inline stapler.

The machines in the new MFP M725 line employ the standard-capacity HP 14A toner cartridge, which is rated at 10,000 pages, and the high-capacity, 17,500-page HP 14X toner cartridge. The 14A/X toner cartridges are existing supplies and have been used in past machines such as the LaserJet Enterprise 700 printer M712 family. The new MFP line provides a best per-page cost of 1.29 cents with the 14X cartridge installed, which is identical to that of the line’s predecessor, the M5035, with the HP 70A cartridge installed.  Additional consumables for the M725 models include a 110V maintenance fuser kit and a 220V maintenance fuser kit.

The MFP M725 series is an addition to HP’s lineup, but leverages the same print engine as the 35-ppm LaserJet M5035, which was released in 2006 and continues to be marketed. The MFP M725dn, M725f, M725z and M725z+ are available now with MSRPs of $3,599, $4,699, $4,699 and $5,899, respectively. The “dn” and “z” models sell at the same price points but are differentiated by media handling and finishing features. The new M725 family breaks new ground in terms of its price/performance ratio. With print speeds of up to 40 ppm and standard duplexing and ADF, the machines have the feature set that allows them to go toe-to-toe with Segment 3 and 4 copiers, but their sub-$6,000 price tags give them acquisition prices well below that of copiers. Lexmark’s 45-ppm X862dte 3 and X862dte 4 are a little peppier than HP’s new machines but came out with price tags a couple thousand dollars higher than the M725 line when they hit the street late in 2009. More recently, Samsung released the 23-ppm SCX-8123NA and the S28-ppm CX-8128NA, which are comparably priced to the HP units but have significantly slower print speeds.
