Epson has expanded its EcoTank offerings to include a range of four mono printers aimed at the SOHO (small office, home office) sector. Other than those key features, it’s a very simple, stripped-down device that justifies its price tag by including two big bottles of black ink in the box. Combined with a print speed of 20ppm (pages per minute), this cartridge-free inkjet can churn pages as quickly and economically as a laser. But without Wi-Fi, an ADF (automatic document feeder), or even an Ethernet port, can it really serve a small office?
The Epson EcoTank ET-M2140’s form factor, with its floating scanner bed, is slightly unusual, and the advantage is that it can collect more paper in its top tray than would be possible with a front-firing tray: 100 sheets to be precise, with room for 250 sheets in the main input tray.
Unlike most Epson printers, the paper is pulled forwards and rolled away from you into the tray. Epson won a Red Dot design award for its mono printers and there is something pleasing about its simple styling.

The Canon imageCLASS MF743Cdw is an all-in-one colour laser printer designed for small or home offices. It uses Canon’s 055 toner cartridges and is also compatible with the 055 ‘H’ high-yield cartridges. Its connectivity options include USB, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet, and it supports NFC and USB flash drives. It has a five-inch, touch-sensitive, colour display and an ADF-equipped scanner with extendable lid hinges, single-pass duplex scanning, and optical character recognition. This printer is part of Canon’s imageCLASS MF740 and MF640 series of laser printers, which include many variants with slightly different features and general performance.
