  • EFI make following statement regarding why people should use their Fiery print servers instead of built-in print controllers with their MFPs:
    • “When you buy a Lexus, you can get the built-in Toyota stereo system or you get the Bose system.  It’s not that they’re Toyota or Bose to get one or the other, it’s if you want the superior capability and it’s like with Fiery like when you get the better sound but you also get better gas mileage because the Fiery actually drives more productivity out of the printing equipment because of the process of the file is faster, get them into production quicker so you can get more clicks out of the actual equipment.”
  • Danwood Group, headquartered in England, announced it has sold its U.S. division to Modular Document Solutions.  Details:
    • Danwood operates many branches in Europe, and had entered the U.S. market in 2007 when it purchased AXSA Document Solutions (Sharp, Xerox, Lexmark & HP dealer) of Tampa, FL, with proclamations that it would spread across the U.S. with other acquisitions (a la IKON, DANKA, etc.)
    • Danwood in Europe got into trouble when it recorded equipment rental contracts as leases, forcing company to restate its earnings, and led to departure of many executives.
    • Modular (Sharp, KIP & Muratec dealer) was founded in 2006, and has 22 offices in Florida, including those acquired when it purchased Docutek Imaging in 2011.
  • Sindoh, another South Korean copier maker that has been trying to break into the U.S. market, announced that Collins Distributing, which was trying to market the A4 copiers to dealers, has stopped carrying the product.
    • Carolina Wholesale, another distributor, still carries the product.
    • Sindoh also signed up Arlington Industries and Image Star, two more distributors, however, unlike Carolina Wholesale and Collins, these two new partners have a primary business of selling generic toner cartridges and parts to dealers who do not buy factory originals.
  • Ricoh launches cloud software platform, called ICE or Integrated Cloud Environment as option for its MFPs:
    • apparently intended to replace current solutions from Ricoh, including eCabinet (launched in late 1990s), Quanp (launched in 2008) and DocumentMall
    • was in development for 27 months
    • program is actually relabeled from Ricoh, as actual provider is Savvis Inc. of Piscataway, NJ
    • slogan is “Smarter Scanning. Mobile Printing.”

  • BMI Imaging Systems Inc. of Sunnyvale, CA announced that its document conversion services and document management systems offering have received certification of complying with National Institute of Standard and Technology Special Publication (NIST SP) 800-53 guidelines.
  • MarketandMarkets stated that its research shows that global wide format inkjet printer market will have 5.7% CAGR (cumulative annual growth rate) and reach $12.5 billion by 2016.
  • Okidata announced it has authorized Impression Solutions Inc., of Columbus, MS, to distribute its printers and MFPs to dealers and resellers in the U.S., in an attempt to increase marketshare.
  • Microsoft turmoil.  3 of the top 20 investors in the company are lobbying the board of directors to press company founder, Bill Gates, to step down as chairman of the board.

  • Production print industry icon, Frank Romano, announced he will serve as Research Professor From Industry at Cal Poly university in California:
    • Romano’s students will produce a book entitled; “History of Phototypesetting Era”

  • Apollo Global Management, which just acquired the facilities management division of Pitney Bowes, announced that name is changed from Pitney Bowes Management Services to Novitex Enterprise Solutions, and will keep existing relationships, with plans to gain marketshare.

  • Leapfrog Research stated the following study results:
    • there will be 10 billion personal mobile devices in use by 2020
    • 821 million smartphones and tablets were sold in 2012
  • Xerox published results of survey that showed:
    • 29% of people have been informed by their doctor that their records are being converted to digital format
    • 83% of people have concerns about having their records become digital
